The T-cells help your immune system fight disease and infection. Your Thymus Gland produces most of your T-cells before birth. The rest are made in childhood and you’ll have all the T-cells you need for life by the time you hit puberty.
What Happens if the Thymus Gland does not Function Properly?
In children the Thymus Gland is quite large but as we age and our Thymus shrinks and we have an increased susceptibility for disease. This decrease in Thymus size and function leads to decreased circulating T cells and alteration of their role. This change in function can increase autoimmune diseases, bacterial and viral infections, and neoplasms.
